The Colombian Academy of Aesthetic Plastic Reconstructive Surgery and the Spanish Association of Breast Surgeons (AECIMA) held on June 3-4 in Bogota the International Symposium on Pedicle Techniques in Mammoplasty and Conservative Oncoplastic Surgery. This was the perfect setting for sharing cutting-edge knowledge on continued medical training, thus offering the best treatment opportunities to the patients.

Liacyr Ribeiro, plastic surgeon from Brazil; Benigno Acea Nebril, expert in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery from Spain; and Roberto Molto, plastic surgeon from Spain, were some of the speakers who guided plastic surgeons and experts in breast oncology and mastology through the new developments of the surgical techniques aimed at improving the appearance of patients with cancer and those patients in need of reconstructive surgeries.

Conservative surgery is the technique of choice in the treatment of women with breast cancer. The conflict between the resection width and the final aesthetic outcome may lead to the presence of asymmetries and deformities, which may worsen after the adjuvant treatment. “The introduction of oncoplastic techniques in the conservative management of breast cancers allows for a wider indication for the preservation of the breast, as well as better aesthetic outcomes. This widens the technical options of the general surgeons specialized in this disease”, explained Dr Lina Valero, Vice chair of ACCPRE.

According to Dr Acea Nebril, for the last decades, surgery has provided women with breast cancer an improvement of the locoregional control of the disease, a reduction of the technical invasiveness and a better perception and appreciation of their physical appearance.
The achievement of these milestones was possible thanks to the advances of the scientific knowledge, which have undoubtedly allowed for the abandonment of the old mechanical concept that fuelled the desperate control of the disease through mutilating techniques which barely improved survival and quality of life (if there was an improvement at all) of breast cancer patients.

The International Symposioum on Pedicle Techniques in Mammoplasty and Conservative Oncoplastic Breast Surgery will be the perfect setting to gather the most renowned plastic surgeons of the country, to present thee scientific developments in the field of breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients and individuals in need of aesthetic reconstructive procedures.
